Wear Valley Wanderer
Hi Folks, Just throwing this out there. I've got nice little Hornby J50 RTR model which is pretty much brand new. I've installed a Zen black decoder and a Kungfu stay alive. The motor is quite noisy, and I noticed it's one of those 'Open frame' designs which I found on some other models of mine are make a loud buzzing as they run. I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know if there's anything out there on the market that can be used as a replacement? Cheers, Mark
DCB
It's a five pole skew wound motor so shouldn't buzz. Is it OK on DC? Might be a resonance. Motor swap looks difficult as it's quite a small narrow unit and if you keep the motor in the smokebox but there is a lot of room in the rear for something coreless if you don't mind a cab full of motor

Is it for sure the motor? could it be the gears? With the motor off the gear train and no decoder in the circuit how does it sound running on a 9V battery? You need to know the source of the noise. If the motor is noisy running on the battery then it should be replaced, which brings us to: On 29/07/2023 at 16:15, Wear Valley Wanderer said: ...pretty much brand new... If it is within a year of purchase, return for refund or exchange. Both my Hornby J50 were smooth running when purchased, but with gear noise, which completely quieted after a couple of hours. This is usually 'lumpy grease' getting properly distributed around the gear train. That's what this product should deliver.
