They were very imposing machines with real presence. Sadly they were already endangered by the time I started travelling around China but I managed to see a handful working. To me there's something very different about seeing trains actually at work compared to preserved railways and mainline excursion trains for preserved locomotives.

Sadly the Jingpeng itself had been dieselised by the time I got there. But the Daban-Lindong-Chabuga section was still steam-hauled when I was there and I enjoyed both photographing and driving some trains on that section. Some previous practice on the Harz with locos fitted with Troffimoff valves made me look like I knew what I was doing.
