SBB Postal Wagons

Evening folks,

I was wondering if anyone could help me identify the below postal wagon (screenshot from a video). I’ve seen these a few times in videos within postal wagon consists and I’m tempted to have a go at scratch building one to go with the rest of my fleet of postal wagons.

Any help greatly appreciated so I can track down a selection of suitable photographs. Many thanks in advance.

Yes, I think they might be the only variant running at present that does not have a model available in some shape or form (that from my mainly N gauge viewpoint as i have almost by accident, built up a large collection of Swiss postal vehicles)

Thank you Gordon. That’s a really good website and those photos will be very useful. It seems that one side of the wagon is different from the other which is unusual.

Best regards,

Jeremy

Not quite, the upper picture shows Z 573 (Z571 - 580), the other shows Z 590 (?) from the subsequent (sub)series Z 581 - 590.

Here‘s a useful article on the different types of TPOs etc.:

Thank you Christian. There’s some info on page 38 on these. Looks like the overall length would be 12.65cm in N scale. The second series had flush loading doors whereas the first series had the sliding doors (looking at the photo). I may scratchbuild one of each for variety.

Looking at the bogies, I may have to do some research and see if I can find a bogie wagon that has a similar bogie arrangement to use as a donor.

By the way, the first website you sent me has a whole host of photos on other Swiss freight wagons.

I didn't recognise the bogie type (and I've done quite a lot of research on bogie types over the years). I don't think you'll find a bogie wagon to suit your plan as they don't look like 'standard' freight bogies to me. Could be passenger bogies

Edited: just re-read the Lokeli article - they are EWIV bogies

Is Lokeli Journal what is now Loki?

Hello Gordon, Lökeli Journal ceased publishing in 2004 (see also the main page of my above link: https://www.huerz.ch/ysebahn.php ). Loki was the result of Die Modelleisenbahn (a.k.a. Goldacher Blick after the first Swiss tabloid) and Eisenbahn-Zeitschrift merging in 1991. At least they are still going strong…!

A quick rummage around in the “box of bits” has already revealed several vital parts….including a spare Minitrix EW iv chassis with bogies!

Technically speaking no Minitrix Swiss coaches are EWIV, so the bogies Minitrix put on their BPm EC type are not EWIV bogies. 'Pure EWIV' bogies would be the ones off the Roco / Fleischmann EWIV.

I dug out an excellent detailed article on Swiss coaches that French railway club AFAC did in the mid 1980s. Sadly the vehicles under discussion didn't exist at that time!

Afternoon all,

Ive made a start on the wagon this afternoon.
After making some dimension calculations and some “guesstimates” of the height of the sides, I’ve made a start in the basic chassis shape. I’ve added some plastic rod which will accommodate the bogies off of a Roco EWiv coach. Just waiting for the glue to dry and then I can drill out the holes and make sure the bogies clip in snug.

I’ll continue the progress updates on this on my layout thread “Gelternau” within the Swiss railways forum.

Best regards,

Jeremy
