Outside W irons

Recommended Posts

I don't know of a source of those as individual items. The upper ones are very similar to the LNWR type, which are part of the etches for London Road Models six wheel LNWR etched underframes. Owing to their thinness, they would have to etched if produced commercially and I suggest there would be little demand for them.

You could design and etch your own (PPD in Scotland etch small, individual, projects) or cut them from Plasticard with Archer rivers for the detail.

There's an Ambis 3 axle set 'for LNWR/NSR and Scottish rolling stock with early narrow plate axleguards' which has got that shape of W iron.  Ref no. is LWBO/C. But it's designed for coach wheel stock with 3' 7" wheels.....

Ah, the early CR coach "W" iron. Not just coaches, the CR recycled a lot of underframes with those for things like empty cask wagons.

I  have hand filed a couple of sets starting with 4 rectangles of 10 thou brass soldered together. Fiddly.

I'd agree Jol. it is a bit specialised. However if some enterprising person did an etch I'd  add a few dozen to the overall demand.

Thanks guys, Ian Terrell (NBR Developments) has kindly provided designs from the etch sheet he undertook for the Caledonian Railway Association CCT.

I have a few of John Boyle’s etches for personal use but others may be required for possible further CRA wagon kits.
