Need help classifying a loco

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I need some help trying to find out what loco this was supposed to be. I bought a half finished conversion for £10.00 from my local model shop. Quite a bit had been done to it and I wanted to finish it off. It started out life as a Triang M7. I have finished as far as I want to go(Except I will be giving it a repaint). I originally thought it is was supposed to be a G5 then some one suggested it may have been a G7. But it does not seem to quite fit either. It came painted as an LNER loco. Hence the original thought it was to be either a G5 or G7. I posted this in the general forum but no one seems to know what it may be. Here is my original link below.

What has been done to the engine. upgrades before I bought it.

1/ New caste metal smokebox and door with separate dart.

2/ New front and rear caste metal spectacle plates.

3/ New bunker rails made of brass.

4/ new caste metal Westinghouse fittings

5/ New brass chimney and dome.

6/ New safety valve fitted.

7/ New finer scale wheels.

8/ Caste metal interior cab front and rear fitted.

9/ Tank filler caps plus other extra details fitted.

10/ Brass front and rear buffers.

11/ Repaint into LNER.

What I have done to try and finish this project off.

1/Handrails front, Rear and boiler fitted.

2/ New brass whistle.

3/ Full set of lamp irons front and rear.

4/ Real coal.

5/ Metal coupling hooks front and rear.

6/ Vacuum pipes front and rear.

7/ floor fitted to the cab and inside of cab painted.

8/ Crew fitted.

9/ Lamps fitted.

10/ New coupling to the front(Needs painting).

11/ Full service as it was a really poor runner when I got it.

12/ Touched up the paintwork.

So that's it. Just need to know what it possibly could be so I can number it correctly. Any ideas would be gratefully recieved.

Here are some pictures of the finished loco.

What LNER 0-4-4Ts had Westinghouse pumps mounted on the smokebox? This was a conscious decision by the previous owner, with no need to make compromises around the locomotive's previous incarnation as an M7.

I do wonder whether the previous owner mistook a push-pull smokebox regulator for a Westinghouse pump, and the model is intended to be a G5. As far as I am aware, G5 Westinghouse pumps (which push-pull locomotives mostly did not have) were mounted on the front of the left hand tank. The dome position is okay for a G5 with a later boiler, but wouldn't do for an original boiler.

Not dissimilar to a Metropolitan Railway E-Class 0-4-4T. Some Met engines ended up in LNER ownership after LT was nationalised but these didnt apparently

Not the E class though. There were only 7 of them. LPTB they withdrew three (78, 79 and 82) almost immediately they took over, and 80 (L47) followed in 1941. As far as I am aware, all four locos were scrapped rather than sold on.
