shortliner
Came across this, which would provide a lot of switching on a fairly small plank-type US layout http://www.the-gauge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3138
JWB
There's a repair facility at Amarillo, TX, which is very similar and possibly even smaller than the one shown at that forum. One interesting feature is that it's used for en-route repair of unit coal gons that go crippled while in trains between the Powder River Basin and Texas, which means you have a prototypical chance to switch individual unit train gons, which otherwise wouldn't happen. It's also, I think, located on a stub of the otherwise abandoned Rock Island Amarillo-Memphis line, east of town. Someone who has the time might want to find it on Google or Bing. I've put in some hard time in Amarillo, but as a railroad town it has few equals.
alcoRS1
in Portland OR, next to the YP Brooklyn yard I found this businesses, these can be model on a few feet easily. Business 1 is a liquid distribution Business 2 is an RJ Corman wagon repair, this could be model in less than 20 inches, it is just the white building on the side or Ajae Sheet metal, very small. the tank building is just about this off the picture to the north.
