coachmann
The 'Yesterday' channel screened a programme in the series 'Their Finest Hour' this evening 9pm to 10pm Monday 26th July, devoted entirely to the railways of Britain during the 1939 to 1945 war years. Excellent footage of Big Four trains shifting materials, bomb damage and serious anecdotes from footplatemen involved. Watch out for it coming around again. Larry G. Mike at C&M
I saw this programme and recommend it to you all. The recollections of the railwaymen, who were geographically well spread out, were almost beyond belief - handling a train running away down from Sough tunnel when loaded with ammunition, spending a night parked in a tunnel with a loco in steam whilst the bombs rain down outside, working over 24 hours because the manpower was needed etc. etc. etc If you ever need convincing that railwaymen took pride in their work, here it is! Very humbling.
coachmann
The railway programme is billed to go out at 10am today (27th). (The 'Yesterday' programmes later today cover the coal miners at war).
