South Wales freight

Recommended Posts

Lurking around some South Wales docks recently has produced a few variations to the norm.

.

On Thursday 22nd. October, the Newport Alexandra Dock Jct - Barry Docks trip was worked by 60045, which is seen held up whilst the dock security are summoned with a key to the new lock fitted to a gate into Dow Corning land. The train is standing on the loading pad of Dunn Bros. scrap yard.

.

A week later, 66180 worked a Cardiff Docks - Margam steel train, a rare occurrence these days a train in Cardiff Docks. The empty train is seen with after running around. The former Minimet oil terminal is behind the train, and to it's right is the compound of Coastal Containers, both rail served, but lost their services around 2006.

With the 'winding up' of Advenza, DRS have taken over the running of the Crossley Bros. Shipley to Tidal Sidings scrap working for the Celsa (UK) Tremorfa steelworks.

.

On Friday 30th. October the train was worked by DRS 66427, which, after dropping it's load of twelve VTG JXA wagons at Tidal Sidings ran light to Cardiff Central to stable with the moribund Advenza 57005.

.

The following morning 08782 'Castleton Works' propelled the wagons into the Celsa (UK) scrap bay.

Radyr ...... first shed I 'bunked' back in the 60s just after the end of steam, with it's then hordes of "six-eighters" the odd Hymek, shunters both BR standard and BR (WR) 15101 et al and of course a couple of 'nine-fivers'.

.

Now another shot, included solely because this line - allegedly mothballed, at least that part that hasn't been stolen ! - is disappearing under the Church Village By-Pass.

.

The shot, taken circa 1979 from the roof of a PW hut shows an unidentified 'six-eighter' (alright Cl.37) working coal from Cwm Colliery (Beddau) to Llantrisant, through Common Branch Jct.
