"Wales, Rails, Rain & Steel" A micro steelworks layout... in the rain!

HI Marc

Very much looking forward to seeing this in April, another master piece and the mirror looks totally convincing!

You have really captured the look of a steelworks, giving the feel of heavy industry at work and grim!

Well done!

All the very best

Hi all,

Just a quick note to say I haven't posted anything much here recently

I will explain......

I had, from the outset, wanted this layout to be set mostly at night,

but also in the RAIN!

As attendees of the recent SWAG taunton do will confirm...

I was reluctant to mention this sooner,

because I wasn't sure how well it would work......

I basically coated all floor surfaces with gloss varnish

(a tad dangerous, when the layout was nearly completed)

if that hadn't worked, I would have had to coat everything in Matt again!

I found that particularly on the road in the foreground,

I had to darken all surfaces, before glossing

otherwise the surfaces are too light, and you don't get the reflections you want / need

And surfaces become darker than you anticipate......!

Also, you then lose subtle differences between surface colours too :(

Oh, and by the way, the actual name of the layout is

"Wales, Rails, Rain & Steel"

I just wanted to get away from the more "traditional" type of names we use.....

I'll post some of my own piccies soon,

but there are a couple on the SWAG taunton members day thread

Cheers

Marc :D

Hello Marc,

Hope you are well. For some reason my e-mail notifications suddenly started arriving again, so I've been able to spend a happy half hour reading through what I've missed & to see yet another stunning little layout has arrived from Smith Works!! It looks tremendous, can't wait to see the wet version! I keep having these ideas of what I'd like to do with my layout if (when??!!) I ever get round to progressing it some more, & setting it on a grim, wet, winter day is something I often come back to, so I'll be very interested to see how it turns out!

Do you know if there's a show at L&B again this year, & if there is will this little gem be there??

All the best

Keef

PS - who were 5 star? Must have been before my time..... :unknw_mini: :D

Hi there Keef!

Nice to hear from you, glad you like this little layout

It wasn't quite finished on the members day - but should be shortly......

Yes, the L&B charity weekend is on again this year

and it's the usual weekend of Father's Day

I'm intending taking this layout to that, and the Cardiff show

(it should be near 100% complete by then  )

I enjoyed doing the puddles for this model,

and even if I were moelling a "dry" layout, I'll include one or 2 on subsequent layouts!

The method seems to work well....

Hope you get round to starting a layout soon matey

There were a couple of small layouts at Northampton,

and I thought about several modellers who want to do something small

I'll email you some snaps I took, if you like.....

Cheers

Marc

P.S. re 5 Star, you didn't miss anything!

They really were terrible

Hi Marc,

yes please, I'd love to see the snaps when you get a minute! I'll pencil in the L&B weekend & look forward to seeing the layout then!

And unfortunately, you're right, I didn't actually miss 5 star, just wished I had...!!

Hi folks,

Appols for not posting updated pics

- I just don't seem to have any spare time these days!

Anyhow, this is just a quick reminder

that it's the Lord & Butler charity weekend show,

the weekend of Father's day 18th & 19th June (just a week + a bit away..... woo hoo!)

My layout "Wales, Rails, Rain & Steel" will be there,

along with some great layouts;

Barry Tens' "Paynestown" Welsh valleys terminus

Rouse 2037s' "Neptune Rd" - a superb industrial/ goods yard inglenook,

and Steffan Lewis's sublime "Maindy East" - which has been re-vamped

There are lots of other layouts too,

plus bargains from the shop - new releases etc!

and some of Adrians brilliantly weathered stock....

All this, and it's totally free!

But a percentage of L&Bs takings, money raised from buckets & a "have a go" layout

all goes to the very worthwhile charity "Ty Hafan" childrens hospice - who really do some wonderful work!

So come along, support the charity and help raise its' profile,

spend some cash in the shop, and chat about trains!

- you know me...... I'll talk trains for hours!

C'mon, it's free entry!

How about some of you Waggers out there, coming over the Bridge, to support our local WAG group?

See you there

Marc

PS. It seems to have rained even more on my layout,

since the SWAG day in Taunton....

What a brilliant layout it just ouses atmosphere

what kit or model is the black scrap waggon based on

Many thanks

David

Hi David,

The black scrap wagon is a model of the Blackadder wagon - a once common sight at ASW Cardiff

The kit is a resin 51L models kit. It's available from Wizard models, as are transfers

Ta for the kind comment

Hi Marc,

Its was good to see you once again at the L&B show last weekend. I was well impressed with the layout and it has indeed been an inspiration (and a kick up the backside) to get up into the attic and get to work on my buildings.

The atmosphere you have created on your's is very nicely done, I'm liking the setting of a dark, wet night. You have done a brilliant job on it.

I'll look forward to seeing it again some time. :D

Cheers,

PS: Did you get the reply I sent to an inbox message I missed?

Thanks for the kind comments folks!

Come along & say hello at this Saturdays members day,

if you're coming along to Stafford, that is.....

and if you're not, well, why not?

Please be sure to bring an umberella - I may bring along a water pistol,

to add to that "Welsh-weather" feeling

Cheers

Marc
