Two switching videos and more trees for Sweethome Al

I shot and edited a couple more videos for Sweethome Alabama, after adding yet more trees on the layout, this time in the foreground of the East Yard.

I have included a bonus featurette in episode 4, showing some 'speed modelling', when I accidentally left the camera running while I added a few trees and bushes to a somewhat barren area.

Here are the links to the videos and some photos of the area modelled

Really nice work Jon. An inspiration! Still debating how I am going to have all these enormous wagons and locos in a fairly small space! The joys of US/Can outline modelling when you haven't got a '4000 square foot basement' blink.gif

I had a go at making a larger tree tonight and took some progress photos as I went

Starting off with a basic home-made twisted-wire former, I glued some WS poly fibre to the ends of the branches and teased the clumps out. This creates a 'candy floss' effect, as suggested by some wag at the model RR club this evening.

I sprayed the tree with a tin of 'track colour' to mute the garish colours and darken the branches, teasing out the poly fibre after the paint had dried.

Once done, I mounted the tree into a block of expanded foam (as used by flower arrangers) and set to it with the hairspray - away from the layout and in a well ventilated area - it smell's like a 'tart's boudoir'.

More to follow...

I applied the hairspray to a small portion of the tree at a time and sprinkled on some fine Hornby 'Skaledale' ground foam using 'burnt grass' first, followed by 'autumnal mix'.

I also added some Silflor ivy to the trunk

The finished tree has now been placed on the layout, although I may be 'borrowing' it for a revamp of some of the trees on Sweethome Chicago - look out for that topic soon.

I saw him make one last night anyway Jon a youtube vid I've been looking at had a SD40 in C&O livey but with a CSX patch job dated 2006

It was this actual tree, Bill. I finished it when I got home and took the pics

Was the SD40 in C&O blue or Chessie yellow - I've seen plenty of patch jobs in Chessie paint, but no video of C&O, especially as recent as 2006

The last C&O painted engine was SD40 #4617 which somehow made it to 2009 in a mongrel CSX yellow ended/C&O sides scheme.

It's wierdly attractive. I wonder how it managed to miss so many potential trips to the paintshops - must run like a Swiss watch.

Jon have you seen the photos of the SD 35's on page's 222 and 223 of the diesel spotters guide

Yes I 'spotted' them and have given ut up as a bad idea. They will have most likely been regeared for hump work so wouldn't have been seen out on the road afterwards. I found plenty of photos though - with several in patched SCL paint

It was quite the celebrity here...spent a lot of time in Maintenance of Way service and being used as a heavy shunter at Queensgate Yd in Cincinnati. The Seaboard System/early CSX years are appealing in the variety of paint schemes that survived and coexisted.

If you want a unit that can do a patched SCL livery into the early 1990s, pick up a GP40. They were more tenacious than cockroaches...and got about as nasty looking too! This one's typical http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/photos/GP40/6680scl.jpg - note the lime green showing thru the dynamic brake grills. It's an ex Seaboard Air Line "Jolly Green Giant" GP40...and I just love the cab numbering on this one http://www.trainweb.org/csxphotos/photos/GP40/6688scl.jpg . Wow.

Excellent photos - I have some SCL decals coming from Microscale

'shunter' - not a word I would expect from a Yank. Must be too much interaction on this forum. ;)
