With snow like that it's surprising British Railways didn't invest in at least some snow blowers (I don't ever recall hearing of any, correct me if I'm wrong!), I suppose manual labour was much cheaper anyway. I was surprised the men clearing the snow in "40 mile an hour winds" weren't wearing gloves, that kind of wind chill can be pretty brutal. Maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age!
