RIP James Carlin

I had a sad telephone call from Chris Hewitt on Tuesday night to inform me that

James Carlin sadly passed away in hospital early hours Monday.

Many of you will know Jim maybe not for his posts here, but for his love of the

hobby and vast knowledge of the real railway which he happily worked on for the

majority of his working life. There cant be many of us who have attended a show

in the last twenty years that Jim hasnt been at and had a tale or two to tell us

all.

His early career was a butchers boy until 1940 but Hitler saw to that, he soon because

of his slight build and aged fourteen began a career on the railway working his

way through various roles and ranks at Bank Hall, a chance of becoming a past

driver at another shed away from his home city of Liverpool came to fruition and

with his promotion a move back to 8A Edge Hill, his tales were legednary, also

being a comic and having a stage name he was always able to twist a tale so you

never really knew was that tale really true?

His swan story amongst many more is one I will cherish for a long long time. I

am just sorry that his expereince and skill wont feature in any of my future

projects something I will forever regret. He really could help out in providing a diversion

front of house if something went awry he knew his craft and his public and always had a

jokey way to deflect a stalled loco or such like.

He enjoyed a happy retirement, had immense enjoyment of a good pint and good company,

I am glad to have known Jim and roomed with him on many shows and attended as many

other shows in his company, they just will not be the same again.

Shame my first post to this new place is a sad one

Ian
