Weathering Farish Mk.1's (Poole mouldings)

Hi all,

 

I was wondering, since i do like to weather my stock these days, is it possible to brush a thinned matt varnish coat over the carriages before applying Carr's powders? As I am concerned that the sides may disintegrate due to the thinners within the mixture (which after a month of sitting on the shelf has thickened nicely).
