The seminal work on LMS signalling practice was  'A Pictorial Record of LMS Signals'  by L.G. Warburton, published in 1972 by OPC.  It has long been out of print and I went to the trouble of photocopying the entire book in the early eighties.  

 

It's now been re-issued in softback, link to Ian Allan Publishing;

Many thanks for that info, I have ordered a copy from Kevin (Robertson), the cover pic is very similar (swap l/h distant for a home/starter) to one of the signals under construction for my layout .
