Love the one of 38 with the front door of the coach flung open. A five minute chat on the blocks and a short walk to Mickies for some chips. I loved 38 on the Birminghams.

Hi did not rate 38 tbh and on the day of the photo it was a bit of a stagger, not surprising i supouse as Formidable last had a classified repair way back on the 21/12/84.If memory serves, but i will have to check think it was first time for the year.

So i take it 38 your machine?

Hi dont you mean Smarties :D

Same pattern did not rate Anson much either, but each to thier own.

Others did not rate care for included in Numerical order 50003/007/011/012/013/023/026/027/and 043 with probably worst been 26.

Anyway here is a pic of your machine.

One of my last runs with 22 Anson runs round the stock at Oxford after working 1F52 to work E.C.S back to OC.post-5841-0-23971400-1295487154_thumb.jpg

Ta for that. I thought 22 looked fantastic in its final weeks, mostly faded blue with patches of undercoat green coming through on the cab fronts. Very modellable. I'm doing a small WR shed model set around the end of 1987 so it'll fit in just great. See some of my pics on page 5 of this thread.

22/38/29 were my favourite three. Never cared for 27 or 44 really. 26 was a bag of spanners and they should've left it on that Padd-Banbury restriction for ever. Still, hopefully all the money Paul has spent on it will have sorted it out.

Still, mechanical condition and performance was not always how I set the bar for liking an engine. To me, it was all about the memories. As long as a bash was memorable - for whatever reason - having a particular loco again and again would make it stick in your mind.

PS Smarties, Mars Bars, whatever she had on her at the time.

PPS My 100th post here. I really have some catching up to do.

Hi at last somebody agrees with mr re 26 it certainly was remeber having it on 1V19 in August 1990 have to check date, and it was a stagger.Agree with you Anson did look great and in a proper Livery.

I was like you did not just rate them for mechanical performance, after all 35 had its problems before NSE,agree with you about Lion but not Exeter, did not rate at first but did in later years.Renown was a decent engine as well.My favourite three 35, then 17 and 34.Furious was aruably known as Old Oak's best engine, i loved it and would rather it had been saved instead of 27 and 26.

Anyhow more pics of Vacs during NSE years

Enjoy

First Tand C

The main sphere of operations was Padd to Oxford, Banbury/Newbury

So starting at Paddington

Howe with the Paignton 19/08/89 flagged this for 35 on the Newbury but sticking loyal with my machine was rewarded heavily later in the day.

Vanguard on 1M12 another fave of mine this was a new service with start of the Summer timetable and frequently strummed, however a good day as having 33 up on 1V91 Vanguard did the honours 03/06/89

Rare one at Padd Tiger have date down as June 88 and i have no idea what it was doing there, but a nice shot of 28

A very tattey Hood with 1M01 10/12/89 with NSE stock instead of aircons

Finish with my Machine Ark Royal waiting to go with 1M58 and more miles in the book 04/05/88post-5841-0-01550300-1295538069_thumb.jpgpost-5841-0-74333900-1295537910_thumb.jpgjpg]post-5841-0-45208100-1295537607_thumb.jpgpost-5841-0-38197800-1295537326_thumb.jpgpost-5841-0-41553400-1295537209_thumb.jpg

Rodney on arrival with 1M17, This and 1M20 great trains to do as any Vac could turn up 28/04/88 except 149 :D and the early casualties.

Repulse running round after arrival with 1M17 03/02/88, 30 as common as muck on theese workings but only had Renown once and no camera, was always forgetting or could not be bothered prefered haulage mileage to photting.Achilles on arrival with 1M20 March 88 i was at college on lunchbreak and used to view this if a fave or low mileage wagged the afternoon off.post-5841-0-96656600-1295540797_thumb.jpgpost-5841-0-04470400-1295541231_thumb.jpgpost-5841-0-96355900-1295541350_thumb.jpg]
