St. Simon
Hi, It's because the chips Hornby use have been designed and made with the help of ESU (?), who's chips can run on DC with some sounds. The chips Bachmann use have been designed and made without the function of running on DC. Many European and American models can run on DC with sounds and I think probably, this will transfer to UK models in time, so be patience Simon
SRman
Not quite, Simon. Hornby and Bachmann both use ESU LokSound decoders. The Bachmann ones simply have CV13 set to a value of 0 which means they don't "play" on DC. Hornby's sound locos leave the factory with CV13 set to a value of 1 which means they play sounds on DC. I have changed the value of CV13 for a few friends who have bought Bachmann locos but wanted to run them on DC layouts. Anyone wanting Bachmann sound locos to run with sound on their DC layouts merely have to find someone (perhaps the shop or a friend) with a DCC system that will allow them to change that value.
