Lance is a professional layout designer and builder in the US and has written a number of books and articles. His latest book is a 106 page paperback which takes the reader through all the stages in designing and building a small layout. The real beauty is that all of these techniques are applicable to any size, scale or gauge of layout. The key section is what he calls Difference Makers; "to isolate and prioritise the tiny handful of very simple techniques that make a dramatic difference in the appearance of a layout." This includes ideas on making backscenes look more realistic plus which detailing ideas work to enhance the appearance of the overall scene.
