dagrizz
I want to replace the 14mm wheels and axles on an old Lima parcels van that I have. I've done this before and bought replacement wheelsets, on the 24.5mm axles needed for Lima stock, from Alan Gibson. My question is; does anybody else sell these? I was hoping to buy some at the Nottingham show but I note that of the many specialist traders present, Alan Gibson is not one of them. backwaterscotland
Intercity models do 24.5mm axle wheels in their Superoller range. Another option is to buy a Micromark Truck Tuner (I got mine from Wizard Models) which enlarges the backs of the axle boxes and allows standard 26mm axles to be used. dagrizz
Andy, These seem to be just what I'm after. Thanks. Graham
k9-70
Instead of replacing the undersize Lima wheel sets, why not completely replace the bogie as well ? This is one of several GUV's I've done replacing the Lima bogies with Mainline BR 1 bogies. The wheel sets are Hornby R8234 14.1mm Wheels (4 hole). The flush glazing is by SE Finecast, the bars behind the windows are the original Lima ones removed from the roof and glued as a strip directly behind the flush glazing. dagrizz
K9-70, Yes, thank you. I have used this approach on some other Lima vehicles but I used Bachmann bogies. As well as sorting out the wheel issues, it has the added benefit of the slimline tension lock coupling. However, the vehicle concerned has been weathered (not by me) and I don't want to change the bogies as I'm not confident that new bogies could be treated to blend in with the rest of the weathering. Il Grifone
The problem with replacing the original wheels is that they are only 11.5mm in diameter (1 metre in H0 scale - Lima fitted these to most of their rolling stock) and larger wheels will raise the buffer height. There will probably also be clearance problems with the floor. These can be solved by raising the floor however. It is possible to use the Lima axles and fit Hornby wheels or any others that use 2mm axles (most). The insulated wheel comes off quite easily, but the uninsulated ones may need to to cut off as they are a tight fit. Not too difficult as they are plated brass Heat might work too. dagrizz
David, Good point - I've just checked the wheel diameter and they are 11.5mm, not 14mm as I was assuming. Intercity models do 11.5mm dia wheels on 24.5mm axles so thats OK. Thanks Graham
