Hi, I could start a real thing going hear but I'm going to suggest it, what about commissioning Dapol to make some for you, their looking for people to do it and you could sell the spares on RMweb.

Nigel

Good shout - it's being done!

Forgive my ignorance of specific wagon types but are the r-t-r 'clay hoods' Kernow are proposing different to the ones you're after?

David, I'm not sure who the question was aimed at, but in my case anyway they are not the same wagon. UCVs are the later ones with the peaked hoods.

That does raise a question, though - can the Kernow wagons be converted to UCVs?

I believe they are exactly the same wagons, with the peaked hoods being a later (1970s?) addition - given the hood hides the rail that supports it you ought to be able to change the hood and do lettering mods to update it?

I agree, what little we know about the Kernow model is that they are the BR clay with a vacuum brake rigging, and the clay hoods are a simple adaption of them with a fixed tarpulin support (unlike most tarpulin supports which fold aside. http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brclayhood

Mike,

I realize that I'm somewhat late to the party on this one, by over 3 years in fact, but I was just wondering if and how you solved your search for suitable 7mm China Clay wagons.

I'm in exactly the same position as you were in 2011; in fact, I've been looking  for a 7mm diag 1/051 wagon for years. No one seems to be interested on making one, despite it being available in both 4mm and Gauge1.

I did manage to obtain a number of etches of the old 'Wagon and Carriage Works' kit from Kalgarin. They bought the kit from WCW then promptly withdrew it pending updates, but that never happened.

Perhaps If there was enough demand, they could be persuaded to produce more etches at least??

The original kit was let down by wrong brakes and over scale W iron/axle boxes, but the basic body and sole bar is quite good, not withstanding a white metal end door. (I used ABS W irons)

The WEP kit is great, but it is an O13 diag, and doesn't really translate onto a 1/051. It does however, lend itself to converting to Morton brakes per early BR days.

Id be interested to hear what you've done.

Gord

Rather than starting a new thread, I'll ask here again - has anyone offered or announced a UCV Clayhood in 7mm since the last update?

Funnily enough I suggested it to Parkside last week thinking that they could perhaps adapt the mineral wagon chassis parts. They replied that the over body length is different and sadly didn't say "but it's such a bloody good idea we will crack on anyway"

There must be a market for these you'd think.

Parkside do sell sprues at reasonable prices so I did vaguely toy with getting the strapping etched and mounting scratch built bodies on adapted Parkside underframe with peco or other self contained buffers. It's a lot of work and cost to do that for a train's worth tho.

Several years ago one of our more knowledgeable members suggested a commercial underframe that would be appropriate for carrying a scratchbuilt body, but I lost that information. To be honest this is a side interest (my main modeling is US outline Proto:48), and if it's too time consuming I'm unlikely to do it. A kit, though... that would inspire me to build a few.

This might be a good project for someone with CAD skills to produce on Shapeways.
