Patagonian prototypes (and a little Chile) ......

Recommended Posts

My son has just returned from an extended trek through Argentina, starting from Punta Arenas (Chile) then primarily though Patagonia to Esquel via Puerto Madryn; before returning to Buenos Aires via Bariloche.

.

Uploaded below are some photos of locos he would like help in positively identifying.

.

Photos 1 & 2 were taken at Esquel from where he rode the footplate to Nahuel Pan (the location of Photo 7) and back on the 750mm gauge 'La Trochita'.

.

Photos 3 & 4 were taken at the 'Park of the Magellans' in Punta Arenas, Chile. The steam loco, I believe, is a 'Hanomag' product, but can anyone positively ID it, and the diesel ?

.

Photo 5 shows a loco built for the 'Welsh' railway in Chubut, and to my eyes has a Beyer Peacock or 'Scots' look about it. This may be in Bariloche.

.

Photo 6 was taken from a bus window near/in Buenos Aires.

.

Over to you folks.

TIA

Lucky fellow!

Here are some details on the Argentine locomotives.

Photos #1/#2 Loco no.4 on the Trochita is a Baldwin 2-8-2 (75B class) of 1922 (BLW 55432/1922). I can't identify numbers on the locos in photo #7.

Photo #5 looks to be the Beyer Peaccock preserved at Puerto Madryn. If so, it's a metre gauge 2-6-0, FC Central Chubut no. 3, BP 2964/1888. (One that I find personally painful having been unaware of its existence when I passed through the town in 1992!).

Photo #6 Is an ex-War Department 4-6-0T (Hunslet 1332/1919*, originally ROD 2360), 600mm gauge, and one of a post-war surplus batch converted to tender locomotives before sale to the Buenos Aires Great Southern Railway (BAGS). These locos passed on to the FC Economico Correntino and thence to FC General Urquiza. It is on display at Retiro Station, Buenos Aires.

*Some sources give build year as 1917.
