Modern loco/ Carriage lamps

Recommended Posts

Replica Railways makes battery tail lamps in OO. They come in the more usual white so you'd need to give them a lick of paint to look like your image above. They're also the BR design rather than the more modern version above but I doubt you'd spot the difference in model form.

I should add that these are non-working.

A flashing red LED hidden inside a coach or wagon with a battery (or resistor and pickup if you're on DCC), drill a 0.5mm hole in the end of the LED and feed some 0.5mm fibre optic into the hole, sealing with a bit of superglue, then paint over the whole LED with several coats of black paint so no light leaks out except the end of the fibre optic strand, then drill a 0.5mm hole in the end of your carriage in the appropriate spot, and in the lamp where the light should be, and feed the fibre optic through the hole, and trim to suit.

Then a blob of glue to hold the lamp to the back of the carriage, and you're done.

A small on/off switch can be fitted either to the base of the vehicle, or if it's a wagon have a removable roof/load and have the switch there instead.

Alternatively, if you're on DCC you could use a cheap, old, spare basic chip and put it on a function instead. Some chips have a flashing option (via a CV) so you could use a normal red LED.

A similar principle using flashing yellow LED's can be used to simulate indicators/hazard lights on vehicles (although you'd need them all going to the same LED which might be difficult), straight red LED's for brake/rear lights, and straight super-bright white LED's for headlights.
