Sadly the pilot died in the crash. The Arrows were performing a 'salute' over Bournemouth airport on their final circuit before landing, when during their famous split display, one of the jets appeared to be unable to pull up from its trajectory and impacted in fields a few miles from the airport. Local media have been reporting people tried to pull the pilot out of a river (part of the jet seems to have stopped there), and the MOD have confirmed the death of the pilot of Red 4.

Terrible tragedy, I'd only been watching them perform 20 minutes beforehand

BBC News have just reported that the MoD have confirmed that the pilot was Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging from Rutland, 33 years of age, only in his first year with the Red Arrows. A great shame. Condolences to his family, friends, and the Red Arrows team.

(minor edit to put 's' on end of condolence)

Hi,

This is very sad news indeed, my and I'm sure the whole of RMweb's thoughts go out to the Pilot, I hope his memory lives on in the team. The Country has once again lost a incredibly talented Pilot and Heroe doing what he loved

I would suggest that there isn't any speculation as to the cause (I'm not saying that there has been any) until the Royal Air Force and Ministry of Defence have carried out a full investigation.

R.I.P Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, aka 'Red 4'

Hear, hear, Simon.

Perhaps those who have been kind enough to express their condolences would be interested in the following threads of another forum I frequent:

A sad and tragic loss of an extremely skilful and brave young man. My thoughts and prayers are with the relatives and many friends he leaves behind. May they somehow find the strength to cope without him.

Always take pprune with a pinch of salt, alot of rumour mongers, people in the industry who hide behind tag names and full of press trying to get stories. Always wait for official announcements.

Another sad day for the Reds, my condolences to the families involved.
