DonB
Three snaps which I took in 1957 on B/W film (contact prints are 2.5" x 2") they are on a film roll otherwise devoted to Festiniog subjects. Any Ideas of the location of the first picture? , and Identity of the loco in the second & third pictures?
RMweb Gold mcowgill Posted October 17, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 17, 2011 The loco appears to be a De Winton 0-4-0VBT and the second photo suggests that it is a wider gauge than the more common 2'. The photos of the loco suggest it might be a coastal location (pier? in the background of the 3rd photo and low lying land/coast? on the second photo). My guess is that this is Penmaenmawr & Welsh Granite Co. on the North Wales coast which used 3' gauge and had a number of De Winton locos. One of these (Llanfair) is preserved on the WHR at Dinas but I think the loco in the photos might be 'Watkin' of 1893. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Winton) has Watkin out of use by 1944 and there is a photo part way down this page (http://www.irsociety.co.uk/Archives/5+6/north_wales_ng_1963.htm) showing it out of use on the quay at Penmaenmawr in 1955. This last photo shows it in a similar state to your photos with no coupling rods. Martin

DonB
Thanks for the responses. Although I recall the visit to the Festiniog, I have to say that I have very little recollection of going to Penmaenmawr!
