Bachmann 100 t TEA tankers in BP green (originally said Shell)

I don't know when these models came out - 2 or 3 years ago? But at various times I've acquired five of them, including two picked up within the last few months. When running them out of the box for the first time I noticed that one of the five has a different ladder and roofwalk to the other four. Instead of being the same green as the body, and with a single ladder at either end, the roofwalk is silver (not very neatly applied) with a pair of ladders at one end only. Where the normal ladder should be is a pair of locating holes. There's nothing on the box to indicate any difference in the moulding, so what I have got here? All of these models were bought as new.

The more I look at it, the more this is obviously a home-brewed conversion, not done very well. As I said, the silver has not been very neatly applied (it doesn't come all the way down the side of the roofwalk) and the two ladders at the end are just crudely glued into place, again with the former locating holes still visible. Looks like they came from the 2-axle tanker. The clincher is that the running number on both these models is the same, except for the number on the end of the roofwalk.

The question is why would someone have done this conversion - does it reflect a real variation in the TEA? Unfortunately I'm not able to determine which retailer sold me the duff model as new (in any case I'd take it up with them rather than mention them here), as by the time I'd noticed the variation, all the models were out of their respective boxes.

Yes, they're definitely from the 2 axle tank wagon. There were some class A tanks with a similar ladder arrangement, with a narrower platform, but there were relatively few of them. I can't find any photos online, but 84900-909 and 84910-23 were fitted with this kind of arrangement, with ladders on both sides at each end of the tank. 84900-909 were originally owned by BRT, and leased by Gulf, but were bought by BP at some point before 2001, I'm not sure when.

There were also some lagged class B tanks with this arrangement, photos of which can be found here:

The delagged Styrene Monomer tanks also had a similar arrangement, and would work quite well with the undersize Bachmann barrel, if you fancied a repaint:
