Bachmann BDA options query.

Recommended Posts

Wotcha,

I recently acquired four of the above wagons (2x Railfreight red, one LoadHaul and the Bauxite prototype) and have subsequently noticed an "issue" which has a number of possible solutions which I'll put up the flagpole awaiting salute.

Further inspection (and eventual recollection of the REModeller review) reveals there is no physical way for my 4mm Shunter to apply the wagon brakes on the Bauxite vehicle! Basically it is missing the brake lever and linkage. As someone who has done some pipe-monkey volunteering, this will not do.

So I'm after suggestions from members that may have had similar challenges:

1) Locomotive spares are often mentioned on RMWeb, are wagon spares as easy to source, I should imagine another bag of stanchions or loads might be available but does Bachmann or any of the dealers sell factory fitted parts either as separate spares or off damaged stock?

2) Would Parkside sell just the spigot containing the levers and linkage out of their kit of the same wagon?

3) On the basis only one side of the wagons would be visible at any time, should I just ping off the linkage and lever on one side of the LoadHaul vehicle and fit that, leaving me with two half-equipped wagons?

Input welcome, C6T.

Sorry i'm not familiar with the model so apologies if this is a silly question, it's not one that's supposed to have handbrake wheels on the bogies instead is it?

I don't believe so. Paul's invaluable site shows the real item here. The Railfreight (and EWS I think) ones do but not the Baux or L/H. I suppose a fourth option could be to put on handwheel fitted bogies, but I'd prefer not to.

  • RMweb Premium

Checking in David Larkin's Wagons of the Early British Rail Era (Kestrel Railway Books) he states Lots 3888, 3907 & 3925 had levers, while 3965 and 3968 had disc handbrake wheels on the bogies; so if the number is below 950801 is should have a lever, 950801 or higher had a handbrake wheel. The same source states the livery change from brown to red was around 950799, so only a couple of examples would have handbrake wheels in brown livery I think.

BTW, the link above is a BCA not a BDA.

Parkside used to sell individual sprues as spare parts I think; the levers from their Vanwide might be suitable.

Alternatively these might help:

Thank you gents,

I was unsure if it was a Parkside or Cambrian kit of the same vehicle available, rather embarrassing as I have one knocking about somewhere!

I do have spare sprues off another wagon, possibly a vanwide, but the lever is too long.

Replacement parts from the BDA kit does seem to be the logical option especially if Bachmann parts are unavailable.

The links to my site are - with levers http://paulbartlett....io.com/bdalever

with handwheel brake http://paulbartlett....io.com/bdawheel

I doubt any of those with hand wheel were freight stock red when introduced, the change to railfreight red appears to have happened with the last of the lever brake wagons. http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/bdalever/e2208a349

Parkside are willing to make all sprues available - when I last had some of these (in 7mm) they were £1 per sprue - I made some nice grounded box vans for very little money!

75p per sprue for 4mm- I just found an invoice- very useful for cross-kitting, drawing on your site for inspiration, Paul.

Happy New Year to one and all.
