roythebus
Informed sources say the special will run again this Saturday Dorking-Horsham, and Sunday WCML to MKS, testing the new brake blocks. The following week they revert to the old brake blocks for comparative trials. roythebus
I suspect today's run will be CAPE either due to weather or the "tragic freight train pile-up" at Bletchley.
roythebus
Well, the test running has been completed according to my informed sources. while he was waiting outside the shed at Selhurst, 171 724 promptly developed an earth fault!! He says he didn't fancy changing 64 pairs of brake pads today anyway!!
roythebus
Further info, the tests were successful with the drivers reporting the new material brake pads were better than the existing stuff giving a better grip on first application and a better deceleration curve. They also stopped about 20m less than the existing material. Apparently the tests were financed by the brake pad suppliers who are trying to get their products approved for use here, hence the trials. Reports suggest that the price difference will save one TOC £14m over the life of the franchise.
