Right Track 11 - Weathering Techniques with Tim Shackleton

We have received the copies of this new DVD back from the duplicators early so have been able to start sending them out this week.

The programme runs for 3 hours 45 minutes and was filmed earlier this year at Tim's home.

If you have seen a copy, please let me know if you have any comments.

Thanks in advance.

I have watched DVD no.1 so far and found it enjoyable and informative.

Its produced to a high standard and seems to follow the tried and tested formula in training; tell people what you'll do, do it and then remind us of what was done. Tim Shackleton seems a bit more optimistic in the flesh than his MRJ editorials had suggested!

I think this represents good value for money and the despatch was very prompt.

Thanks for my copy Chris. I have now watched both parts and found them entertaining and informative. No Tony Wright popping up everywhere in Monty Python style either, unless he was supervising the builders!I like Tim's presenting style: highly knowledgeable, but with a relaxed and informal delivery. He reminded me of someone, but I couldn't think of who it was until I was viewing the second disc. He put me in mind of Rick Stein, the chef, although somewhat toned down! Perhaps it was his confidence and obvious passion and enthusiasm for his subject.Anyway, another good programme. Roll on number 12.

I'm glad you are enjoying it Trevor. We've found a star in Tim and I hope to get him involved in another programme next year. Not sure how he would take to the Rick Stein comparison but I can see what you mean!

Got my copy recently - they were both excellent! Tim has made weathering look really simple and made me regret buying a single action airbrush!

The subtitles are helpful as I can't hear well.

Half way through my copy and to echo the above Tim seems to be a natural ;-) on the camera.

I hadn't realised it but I sat and spoke with for a good while one year at the Glasgow SECC. He's exactly as he comes across in the DVD, laid back, knowledgeable and passionate about his subject.

Some of the models he had at the SECC were :icon_drool: :icon_drool: :icon_drool:

Tim is hoping to be at the Glasgow show again in a couple of weeks.

He will have with him many of the models from the Weathering DVD and you'll find him with the "Retford" demo team.

I'm sure he would enjoy a chat about his weathering techniques and hearing your comments about the DVD.

I purchased the DVD at the York Show and have found it to be first class.

Could Chris advise as to which model of Iawata airbrush Tim was using as Tim only mentioned the product name?

There appears to be a great many models on offer from them and it is a bit confusing as to which is the most suitable.

Thank you.

I am pleased you are enjoying the Weathering DVD.

I'm not sure which model airbrush Tim was using but I have spoken to someone at The Airbrush Company and they recommend the Eclipse CS which retails at about £130. I use one of these myself and they really are very good.

There is a side-feed version called the Eclipse SBS for about the same price if you prefer to have the paint fed from the side of the brush.

When you order one, make sure to get the hose and adaptors as well. These are usually sold as separates.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need any more details.

Within minutes of my posting, I received an email with lots more details from Tim. So, here is his reply...

My main airbrush is an Iwata HP-SB Plus with a .2mm nozzle, a fantastic precision instrument that is a joy to use.

I've used most makes of airbrush at one time or another and the Iwata leaves them standing - you have such delicate control over the delivery of paint so you can come in really close, plus you can fit the side-feed cup either to the left or the right which is a bonus when spraying areas that are hard to access.

I bought it about three years ago on the recommendation of Tony Sissons. Tony has three Iwatas but it's the HP-SB that sees most use. Out of interest the others are a Custom Micron B which is a more specialist tool that gives very fine, hairs-breadth lines and is much used by make-up artists and a suction-feed Iwata Eclipse HP-BCS that Tony uses for 7mm work and track/landscape weathering (I use a Badger 150 for this kind of thing).

Many thanks to Chris and Tim for your prompt and informative replies.

This has been extremely helpful to me and illustrates the excellent spirit of co-operation which is found in the hobby. It also illustrates the power of RMWeb!

The DVD will most certainly be viewed on a regular basis in the coming months and it looks like that another round of spending is now on the horizon.

Chris,

I have watched the DVDs a number of times and am waiting for some sunnier weather to follow in Tim's steps.

I am pretty sure rememner another post on RMweb that you might shoot some additional footage re cleaning airbrushes; did this get anywhere?

Love the Right Track series, when is the next one due for release?

I did say we would do something about it and I am sorry to say nothing has happened as yet. I shall contact Tim, look at ways of doing this and get back to you. Sorry for the delay.

In my defence, I have been busy making more programmes for the Right Track series. We have one coming out at the end of next month on "Wiring your Layout" and we have also been filming with Iain Rice for two more DVDs to be released around September.

Iain has a passion for wagons in all their shapes and sizes and the programmes are in the final stages of production.

... but I will progress the airbrush with Tim !

Sorry to say we do not have a distributor in the US.

If you know of one who might be interested, please let me know. in the meantime, you can order a copy direct from our web site at

Chris

I know this sounds stupid but your ads say they work on any "PC" in the World - but not all TV systems.

Would these work in the USA on TV systems?

Would they work on Apple computers?

Sorry, but sometimes it's frustrating to see somewhat vague wording (yeah, I know that USA companies are just as guilty.....)

Best, Pete.

1) No, the DVD is recorded using PAL ( UK TV system format ) not NTSC ( US TV format ) unless your DVD player can playback PAL.

2) They ought to work on Apple computers, after all Apple are widely used in the media world!

In America, it all depends on the characteristics of your individual TV and DVD player.

The DVDs are recorded and produced in the PAL 16:9 widescreen format but many of our customers in the US say the discs play well on their TVs.

If you are watching through a SCART or HDMI connection, the only significant difference between the US and UK signals is the horizontal and vertical scan periods.

So, if your American TV and DVD player have a wide enough tolerance to accept these frequencies, they will play the discs. If they don't, they won't!

So it's a bit of a "try it and see how it goes" job.

However, the discs will work on any PC or Apple as long as they have a DVD drive and player software.

Incidentally, if you live in the 'States and buy any of the Right Track DVDs from us online, only to find it doesn't work in your TV and player, you can return the disc to us (Activity Media) for a refund.

Thanks, Chris.

My TV is 1080p utilizing HDMI - worth a try! If I can watch on my HD Apple screen I'd be happy though.....

Have you tried Walther's? Can't think of any other nationwide distributers in the US - though I'm a musician not in the model business (of any kind).....

Best, Pete.

No problem, Pete. I'll keep a look out for your order.

If your DVD player is one that will upscale the pictures to 1080p for your TV, then you should see the best possible quality images. Failing that, your HD Apple should do the job.

Please let me know how you get on with it.

Thanks for the thought of Walther's. I'll look into it.

Best

I have been in touch with Tim and we have a couple of things we are hoping to do about this.

We are planning another DVD with Tim for next year and will include the complete airbrush cleaning in that programme. In the meantime, we hope to be able to put together a short sequence to run on our Activity Media web site.

We are working on it...
