CC in Union Mills D20

Hi Guys,

Can anyone offer advice on fitting DCC to an 'N' Union Mills loco.

Hopefully,

Bill

If you dismantle the tender you'll see two things

1. The motor is fed one side from the tender the other from the wire to the loco, both can easily be isolated

2. There is absolutely no room anywhere in it for a decoder, because the tender inside profile is almost a mirror image of the motor block. This does make it very heavy and provide awesome traction but makes DCC more umm exciting. It's fairly easy to trace and see how to dismantle, reassemble as the chassis is a sort of Zen perfection - it's not that there is nothing left to add, there is nothing left to take away.

The two approaches that seem to work are either to mill out the tender if its a big enough one or to hide a short stubby micro decoder (CT 74 series for one) in the cab (eg cab roof), which does mean running more wires between the tender and loco (but these can all be moved to fine wire below the footplate which looks better anyway)

I do wish they'd leave a little more room (a 13mm hole down the centre of the boiler for a sound chamber would be nice too ;))
