Jack P
Morning all, While I put my plans for a big railway on hold, I decided to go ahead and make my first railway, on a 3'9'' plank, pictures put it better than I can; The rails layed out, but not fixed down; The first coats of track grime and rail rust: And then, The big step, ballasting. This was the first time I had ever ballasted track, so please be gentle; More to come as I progress, Jack
shanks522
Hi jack, Thats some very neat ballasting you've done there, My only advice would be to make it a little wider. Graham.
Coldgunner
plank layouts can be fun (see sig). Always good for trying out techniques.

Ahh, I hadn't thought about the width until just now myself, When tyhe current lot dries, I will plan for buildings, and then add some more, Thank you kindly! plank layouts can be fun (see sig). Always good for trying out techniques. ` Yes they can! And a good way to test my skill range, Yours is a neat little one too! I like it! I do plan to have a fiddle yard, hidden, at the other end Jack

Jack P
Very neat start jack, I like a good plank layout, I like the track plan too, how will it work?? I plan to have a 2 or 3 road casette fiddle yard at the end, at the end there will be a bridge, which the tracks will dissapear under to the FY, hopefully. Thank you very much though, I'm glad it's not a total bunk! Jack
mason
Thanks jack and its definatly not a bunk, usually having a simple track plan makes for interesting operation and it also means you can pack plenty of detail into the small area. Look forward to seeing your project progress
Jack P
Being home today I decided to work in the lounge, with the heater and TV, although, the local resident wasn't please with the intrusion; ballasted both points; bonus picture; I also ballasted inbetween the rails leading to the points; Will head down to the local model shop tomorow and then start on the green and the structures (hopefully) Jack
Jack P
Alot has happened since I last updated, I have decided that this will be a static diorama, not a functional layout, I did try different ways of attaching a hidden section, including a folding part- Eventually I just screwed the FY onto the end However that was detached, and now I'm finishing what I can on the senic part, This was good practice for me, however things I need to do next time are; Think about my track plan more carefully, for functionality reasons Cork underlay Lighter colour ballast Solder the rails together, not just rely on the fishplates I will keep this thread updated, for those who care to read, as I progress! Lee Whitty
Hi thanks for the comments on my workbench thought id have a look at what your up to. Looks good mate keep up the good work I particularly like the weathering on the buffer stops.
gazmanjack
Hi Jack, The layout is coming along very nicely, excellent ballasting and excellent weathering on the buffers. I assume the layout will be Southern based ? I have noted that a lot of (UK) modellers lay all their track on cork (tiles) that cover the whole base board, whereas I tend to use the precut N scale cork underlay or just cut the HO/OO cork underlay down the middle. The beauty of the N scale cork is that you get the illusion of ballast falling away from under the sleepers as per the prototype. Yes, you do end up using more ballast, but the result is pleasing. Anyway, keep up the good work and I look foward to more pics soon. Cheers, Gary.
Jack P
Thank you guys!A bag full of grass! Admittedly, there's only one colour, so I need to go pick up some darker colours to finish, but it's almost done! It was also far too cold to go outside today (hehe) so I took pictures inside! Please let me know what you think, peoples! Jack! (it's good to be back! )
