Nice. Regarding the back scene personally I think just the sky is better than painted features. To me they always look exactly that...painted features and are all so twee. Looking forward to seeing this develop, nice woodwork too.

Finally, the rails and card support are cut with a Dremmel cutting disk. The cutting disc leaves a wider gap than ideal and hopefully now you can see the need for those card spacers.

One tip.

If you cut the rails using a razor saw rather than a cutting disc you end up with a much smaller gap between the cut rail ends.No removable packing is needed between the boards as the gap is already narrow enough to allow the smooth transition of rolling stock wheels.I've used this method on my layout with excellent results.(see my link below.
