painting etc wills platforms, brick facia, stone flagging top

There are a couple of techniques which will help you get realistic finished on stone. But first make sure you know what colour the stone you are modelling is! A lot of people simply reach for the mid grey and that is a huge mistake. A bit like painting tree trunks brown? Railway construction tended to use local stone for large constructions like viaducts, however for buildings (particularly prestigious locations) would use dressed stone from just about anywhere! Anyway identify what colour you are aiming for.

This is the Goods Shed at Aysgarth on the Wensleydale Branch/Railway

Note the variation in colour on this single building. You can see the fully dressed sandstone in yellows, oranges and rusty reds and the limestone (guess) in warm browns and greys of the rougher hewn stone.

Now you need to collect your paints. You need a base colour which approximates to the colour you perceive the stone to be, you need a darker shade and a lighter shade, you also need a much darker shade to use as a wash. First paint the stone all over with the darker shade, aim to cover all nooks and crannies. Allow to dry, thoroughly! Next paint over with the base colour, use a damp brush which leave plenty of paint on the surface but leaves some of the darker shade showing in the crevices. Allow to dry. Then drybrush with the light shade, this technique is about applying very little paint with a brush that is virtually dry so that it only adheres to the high spots. Again allow to dry. Next a wash, thin your darkest shade so that it is little darker than mucky water and apply liberally over the whole of the piece, you can help it settle into the crevices better if you add a drop (no more) of washing up liquid to the mix. This can be so faint that you might want to apply a further coat of wash? Experiment.

Finally I like to seal the whole job with a matt varnish to take any sheen off (this can happen with the wash application).
