Ruler to help with measuring dimensions

It's probably been mentioned before but just in case it hasn't, here's a little tip for when you go out photographing things for possible future models..

A couple of years ago I went over to the Czech Republic and took some photos of buildings for future models. Although I did take some measurements they proved not to be enough so this time I'm going better prepared!

Firstly I bought a cheap plastic double sided folding ruler off ebay (I only travel with hand luggage so it had to be small and light!):

The next job was to paint alternate red and white stripes on it marking out the 12" measurements. When I go abroad it will be placed by the items to be photographed so I have something to work on when working out the measurements for the models. I know its an old surveyor's dodge and you can get professional versions, but for under three quid it might help others...
