virginhst539
hi dont know if anyone else has had this or knows how to fix this but i have got some Hornby east coast power cars and Hornby black 5 and ever since i have fitted Hornby decoders they have been running with a rather annoying noise at low speed that was not heard on DC any ideas. i did find a video showing the problem of noisey motors in the model on DCC but i cant find it just now
34theletterbetweenB&D
Try a different decoder type. The Lenz standard offers an excellent silent drive for the money, and if the models mentioned are current product (centre motor drive in the HST, Hornby's usual 'black can' motor in the black 5, will deliver quiet and refined perfomance. If these are older ringfield motored items (motor bogie or tender drive) then they will typically 'chatter' on DCC at slow speed, as the decoder attempts to exert control over the typically poor low speed characteristic. This is inherent to the mechanical design, decoders cannot do anything to help.
Suzie
If your decoder has the option to adjust the PWM frequency you might be able to quieten them a bit, you will have to refer to the decoder manual to see if this is possible, but not all decoders have an option to change it. MercMan
I used a TCS M1 in the Hornby Terrier abd it runs very smooth and quietly. The M1 has quiet drive, http://www.bromsgrovemodels.co.uk/TCSDecodersM1.htm.
