Ruston & Hornsby shunter ex SSEB

Recommended Posts

Some photo`s of our Ruston & Hornsby shunter, gifted to the Kingdom of Fife Railway Preservation Society by the SSEB ( South of Scotland Electricity Board ), one of two shunters donated from the power station at Methil which ran on coal slurry - a waste product from the pits. This loco is of the older type with the slope to the cab front.

the brackets on the buffer beam are for stowage of a shunting pole

this is another engine that has not been fired for 17 years ( no oil in the engine ) but our loco department think it will fire when filled with oil

Hi

Without checking for a works number this is a later type of 165DE as it has the sloping cab front, the first type were flat like the BR PWM's.

Great loco when you get it going, I have always had a soft spot for the 165DE's they are good strong willing work horses, and overcome the issues of the DM gearbox!

Only drawback is the air start :nono: good if the loco holds starting air and its a nice day, but bad news if the 6PS starting enging plays up, I slipped starting one once off the running plate and only when you meet the ground do you rember how high you are.

Andy
