Does anybody know of an alternative method to isolating the chassis of Graham Farish steamers other than using the Digihat?

The Digi-hat is about the neatest solution, you could machine up an equivalent from rod stock Acetal, or Hardlon plastic, and buy the heat shrink separately, but you will have to have a lathe etc., available.

 

The Digi-hat is Graham Farish specific, the idea can be applied to other scales etc., like Dublo Vintage chassis, where Digi-hat may not make a chassis specific version.

 

No connection with supplier, but I do recommend the product as easy to use, and it works fine.

The original way of isolating the chassis was to use the Gerry Spencer conversion kit, not too sure if his web site is still going although Digitrains do still sell them, it uses the original brass bush, which has been coated with an insulating material link to Digitrains Gerry Spencer kit:-

As Ian has said the Gerry Spencer kit is an alternative though the digihat is easier & quicker to fit as the chassis needs to be drilled to accept the Spencer holder & placing it in the chassis has to be spot on to reduce ay risk of removing any insulation.

 

All you do with the digihat is replace the original brush holder a two minute job.
