Video versus DVD query

I used a Sennhieser mic with the Hi-8 camcorder on the end of a longish lead. I'd throw it in the long grass beside the tracks and pick up the long welded rail noise. Even in force 9 gails it could be put beside some stones and pick up the train and crashing waves without any wind noise.
