flyingsignalman
I've been meaning to post these for a while and taking my lead from Dave (Beast66606) here they are. On the 23/1/1982 I travelled on the Cumbrian Mountain Pullman which was steam hauled from Carlisle to Leeds. The train stopped at Armathwaite for a run past where I took these photos of the signal box. On arival at Appleby the train was set back into the connecting link to the ex-NER line to Warcop. We had the choice to stay on the train or alight and have a look around. The train setting back onto the link line. and standing on the link line The passengers were allowed to wander around and I went up to the signal box. Next to it was the S&T Linesmen's hut; I assumed this to be an old signal box reused but I have since learnt these were specially built by the Midland Railway for that purpose. The box itself, IIRC a 1949 replacement for the original box, note the corner fillets on the left hand windows. Inside the box, the blue/black lever for the EFPL can just be seen The box a diagram, when first built the frame was 20 levers, being extended (twice) as extra levers were needed. The final total being 25 levers. Walking back to the station a view showing the rear of the box and the small upper window in the end; this was to allow the Signalman to see the adjacent up home signal. I also took the opportunity to look at the old East station where I took these views of the station building and an old signal post. Finally my sketch of the box diagram
flyingsignalman
On 31/5/1982 I went with friends to photo another steam hauled express and afterwards I convinced them to call in at Horton where I took the following photos. From the platform. Looking back to the station from by the box. The box itself. Views from the box. Looking up. Looking down. Through the door showing the diagram and the frame. My sketch of the diagram. By way of a bonus, 2 photos of Hellifield taken the same day.

coachmann
Excellent. I love the area and the typical track layout in those parts. What must it have been like sitting trackside in the days when steam was an everyday occurance.

flyingsignalman
On 12/4/1982 I went on the "Trans Penine Pullman" which was steam hauled from Carnforth to Leeds by 46229 Duchess of Hamilton and from Leeds to Carlisle by 5690. At Wennington the train stopped for a photo run past. I also managed to photo the signal box. At Hellifield 5690, on the Leeds to Carlisle run, also stopped for a photo run past. I stayed on the platform and made my way to the box where the Signalman let me in. The box from the up platform 2 views of the frame. The diagram (in instalments) The whole diagram. Taken from the box verandah, one of the run pasts. My sketch of the diagram.
