tomstaf
Hi, I'm looking to see how metal loads are tied down on IGA Cargowaggon flats so I can replicate it in model form. There are hooks at the tops of the side and end supports, and tightening ratchets fixed along the length of the wagon. I presume these are for fitting cables and ropes. I've had a google and look on flickr but there isn't much there. Has anyone got some shots of the wagons loaded so I can get an idea of how they do it please? Cheers Tom
Fat Controller
The ones I've seen in the UK use tensioning straps, fitted through the ratchets on the sides. Here's a link to a photo of one carrying re-bar:- http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UKRailRollingstock/I/IGA-Cargowaggon-flats/16608943_xrvqv5#!i=2271154814&k=fdqMdcp&lb=1&s=A and another loaded with timber:- http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/UKRailRollingstock/I/IGA-Cargowaggon-flats/16608943_xrvqv5#!i=2271154768&k=kpXXZtK&lb=1&s=A I've not seen those stanchion-top hooks being used in the UK, though I have seen them used on the Continent, being joined by a length of steel wire, tensioned by twisting it. I have a feeling the load was something like sheet foam insulation; just as well, as the fixing seemed a mite insubstantial..

Thanks Brian, Those pics show up the tensioning straps well - nice bright red Cheers Tom
