34theletterbetweenB&D
While driving alongside the line Sunday morning I could see through the hedge at Welwyn Garden City station yard what appeared to be a set of five coach bodied vehicles in Network Rail yellow and branding. There were I think driving ends and two open verandah sections within the set and some other external clutter. My guess is that this is a tunnel inspection unit, and presumably had been or was about to be deployed on the Welwyn tunnels starting a mile North of the location. Current operations experts, over to you.
Fat Controller
Might it have been a rail-grinding train? These quite often resemble a group of five or seven coaches, albeit with short bodies and very few windows. This is a link to Speno's site:- http://www.speno.ch/en/3_offene_strecke.asp The machines aren't always that clean, especially when they've done eight hours in the Channel Tunnel. Pugsley
It sounds like it could be a rail grinder to me as well. Here are two examples that it might have been, although they're both more than 5 cars: http://www.flickr.com/photos/47118s-pixs/3338253271/sizes/o/in/photostream/ http://www.hentis-rail.co.uk/PooleGallery/2010/PEJD10/images/2/DR79221-DR79226Poole12122010.JPG
34theletterbetweenB&D
Aha, thanks Guys. Looked most like the first example in Martin's post, based on the impression formed through the hedge, while driving the car; so not the most precise obervation you understand...
