RSS Fetcher
This seemed to be the appropriate place to show the Bachmann Super D now made ready for the road. I based mine on 49428, a Longsight loco that occasionally came on shed at Lees (26E) in the 1950's, and very appropriate for my Greenfield layout. This is the loco more or less as purchased in works finish. I had removed the lower cabside sandbox filler and renumbered the loco using HMRS 'Methfix' Transfers. The supplied front guard irons had been fixed in place with Peco track pins after drilling the metal chassis. The following detail shots show the model after it had been weathered, but of course all the alterations were prior to this taking place. The cabside sand filler hole was filled in with Devcon and touched up with Humbrol No.85 grimy black. As the Bachmann guard irons are not long enough, I made deeper guard irons from 7.5thou brass and super-glued them on top of the pinned originals. Also added the rods that I presume activated the cylinder drain cocks. This detail below the frames does add a little more character to these locos. The Bachmann coupling is an operational necessity on my layout. Rust was brushed on in patches using Phoenix Precision No.977 TRACK RUST. This included the base of the cabside where footplatemens boots/clogs kicked it when climbing aboard. The colour also represented spilt sand around the splasher sandbox fillers and onto footplate. A manufacturing necessity has meant the third splasher top is far too deep, so I picked out a portion in rust colour to make it look slimmer (see photo taken above loco). The spraygun did the rest with light coats of very diluted cellulose rust and grey colours. Judging by photos the third set of drivers often got dirtier than the others.
