69843
Hi everyone, Looking at pictures of Scotsman throughout preservation the other day, it raised the question as to why does she still have the cut down rear on the tender (left over from when the tender was used in the 1948 Locomotive Exchange Trials? (seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/graham_williams/7460860608/in/pool-flyingscotsman). I notice that it has been returned to 'normal' above the corridor, but the sides still remain cut down. Weirdly enough, I also found a picture of her with the sides re-instated in 1984 (http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7255/7446503638_aa55489f34_z.jpg), but she later looses the full height rear. Does anyone know why? If anyone has an answer to either question, I'd love to hear it.
frobisher
I think the short answer is that she is not consistently seen with the same tender and there are more preserved A4/A3 tenders than there are A4s and this A3.
slilley
The cut down tender was what Alan Pegler had attached to her 50 years ago when he bought her. Later on when she had changed hands the rear portion of the tender was reinstated. The later photo does of course show her with the A4 boiler. At present I think she still has the corridor tender with the raised rear portion. The original tender tank leaked in the early 1980s there are pictures of her with the tender from 4498 still with metal cutout LNER on the tender side as a stop gap whilst the leaking tank problem was resolved.
