J70 tram engines - bell question

The GER / LNER J70 tram engines were equipped - like ordinary electric trams! - with bells to warn of their approach, and the rather skinny bells are quite prominent on the roof.

Two questions: were they also equipped with whistles (which they would have needed when heading off on the main line to Stratford for overhaul, and possibly elsewhere as well); and did the operating cords for the bells go through the little pipes which are visible sticking out of the roof at each end?

Assuming the latter, were the pipes mounted on the centreline, or were they offset to the side to match the position of the bell?

Thanks to anyone to can help!

The whistle was mounted on the steam dome inside the body, and controls for both bell and whistle were at each end. The bell cord dropped into the cab through the roof above the footplate and ended in wooden handles. The whistle cord ran through eyelets and pulleys on the underside of the roof. There's a GA in a PM for you which explains all.
