Hi

A few of our club members have started work on a new N gauge layout. The first outing will be at our club exhibition 27th July 2013, so progress has been steady.

All the track has been laid and painted. Chris has now started the ballasting, using silver sand. Once this has been finished and tried, this will be sprayed various 'track' colours to suit.

The layout is based in Devon, somewhere near the river Exe, but no-one is quite sure where! A small station, with goods yard and engine shed will feature, along with a branch line running back into the fiddle yard. All of the wiring has been completed. The points are operated on wire-in-tube and all the points are on one board.

More details will be added by Chris as necessary and we will continue to keep updated with any significant developments.

Thank you Daniel. The wiring in general was a black wire for common return, a larger wire from the far ends with dropper wires to it. The lives on the other hand, are wired back to the control board.

The "Up" line is in red, while the "Down" line is in brown. The branch is in blue and the sidings are in a mix of colours. All wires are numbered for ease of "fault" finding.

More to follow.

Chris

Somewhere in sunny Devon, along the route of the Atlantic Coast Express lies the station of West Exe Mill. This mainline Southern station has a branch line to the Great Western region. The era is late steam, early diesel. Pictures above depicts a 03 shunter and a Merchant Navy. In the fullness of time Westerns, Warships, Classes 25, 31 and 33, GWR pannier tanks and Dapol's yet to be released West Country classes.

The layout is in two parts, the left hand side is just power/isolation tracks, where as the right hand side has the point work and isolation switches and power in sockets. Therefore the right hand side can be used on it's own. It is wired for DC but with DCC in mind. Three controllers to be used. Up, down and branch. Points are operated by tube-in-wire.

The fiddle yard is the blacked out area.

Also many thanks to Mudmagnet for taking the pics and starting the topic.

Ola El Presidente!!

All looking good Chris, the track looks good from a distance now it's weathered, & the silver sand ballast will enhance it.

I'll bring my compressor & airbrush to Tuesday's club night, & hopefully we can get some weathering done to tone down the bright ballast with some oily staining & grime.

We need to have a good cleanup of the painted track after all of that, & make sure that we have kept electrical continuity through all of those point blades.

I'll bring in my small fibreglass brush just to make sure that we clear every trace of paint from the blades.Once all of that is done, we can crack on with the scenics, & the layout will really start to come together. Keep up the good work matey.

Rob the one & thankfully only  'Westcountryman'
