North Eastern
This was a feature on our local BBC news last night (see link below). Three cabside plates from NER ES1 26501 were found in the garden of the Swan Inn at Choppington Northumberland. One of only two locos built they worked the steeply graded branch to Newcastle Quayside. The other loco 26500 is currently preserved and on display in the NRM. 26501 was cut up by Willoughby's scrap yard at Choppington in 1966, which was next to the Swan Inn, hence why the panels were used to form part of the fence of the pub's boundry. Only three panels were found, but happily the fourth also exists, and has the NER coat of arms to match the other panel and has been in the possession of the Blyth & Tyne Model Railway Society since it was donated by a late member, Paul Humphries who also worked at the scrap yard. It is hoped to reunite all four panels and to display them along with a history of the loco accompanied by some photographs. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-21742168
