banburysaint
My neighbour has bought a tender drive Scotsman off ebay - the motor runs fine. However when the loco goes around a curve (they are all second radius) the valve gear locks up, and loco slides as the tender drive pushes the loco forward! Has any one experienced this issue before with their Scotsman loco, i presume that there will be a bit of valve gear out of true but i cannot see anything that is obvious. Any advice would be appreciated.
RMweb Gold Barry Ten Posted March 23, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 23, 2013 Without having a close look at the model it's hard to say but I'd have a look to see if the return cranks (fly clank and fly crank rod in the diagram linked to below) are able to foul the connecting rods when the wheels are deflected in a curve. The return cranks are the ones most likely to get a bit buckled if the loco is picked up, but on the other hand it shouldn't take much more than very gentle tweaking to correct any bend in them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walschaerts_valve_gear
