Hornby Mk4 wheel diameter

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm wanting to replace the wheels on my Mk4 carriages for metal ones. Which ones are right? I can't find any sources telling me the right diameter (for the model or the prototype so I can work it out myself).

I would just measure my own carriages but they're all in storage.

Thanks for the help!

I think you'll need 14mm disc wheels but stand to be corrected.

Hornby do a pack of these, R8218.

They also do R8264 which are 2 hole coach wheels but someone else on here more knowledgeable than me would need to tell you whether these are more appropriate or, indeed, what coaches they were used on.

British passenger cars from the late BR Mk 2 onwards have 3'0'' diameter wheels. The correct size in OO scale is 12mm. Holes on carriage wheels are not very noticable.

Just be sure to avoid the 12mm wheels (Hornby says they are 12.5mm) which have 3 large holes - they are only suitable for freight wagons. In the Hornby range I would go for R8096.
