Shell Mex Motor Spirit Tank Wagons

Recommended Posts

Quick question:

I have several Mainline Shell Mex tank wagons in silver with red lettering. What time period (era) do these represent, please? The lettering and wording appear archaic to me suggesting something possible pre-grouping, although I suspect the style of tank wagon may represent something from the late 1920s or 1930s.

I would like to run these in my pre-grouping train of Private Owner and railway company wagons but can I do so legitimately (in a historical sense, at least)?

I have done some searches online but nothing conclusive has come up.

p.s. I must straighten up those wire tank stays!

That design of tank looks like a standard RCH 1927 tank.  Pre WW2 Class A tanks were light stone with a red stripe and they went silver after WW2 (although the rules had been changed to  allow silver in 1939 tanks were dark grey through most of the war).
