Aberdeen Harbour Warehouse

I've taken some photos of an old warehouse down the docks in Aberdeen to research textures and features for a warehouse / factory that will appear on a micro layout I'm slowly building. I used a panoramic photo app to take whole elevation photographs in the confined streets, as well as the normal camera for close ups of various details. Didn't have a proper camera but the phone held its own for the desired result.

There's some interesting features to be found, including the squared off corners rounded on the ground floor, the sliding door recesses and the window built into the edge of one recess, the iron plates for tie bars or girder supports within the building, the actual building material and pattern, as well as the colouring of individual blocks, the corrugated roofing, the adjacent windows filled in with varying materials, boarded up square ground floor windows...

It'll make an interesting subject to model in DAS clay.

The Old Aberdeen Iron Works if I'm not mistaken. (I usually am)

Hmmm... the sites having trouble auto formatting the text sizes again and not allowing me to alter it.

Yep, Wellington street. I had no idea what it was previously until I saw that RCAHMS link, it looked a bit tidier then but it's been in a poor condition for a number of years. I think I saw a sign saying it was available for rent and was owned by one of the oil service firms, can't remember for the life of me which one though.

The other area which might prove interesting for modellers is the buildings bounded by Virginia St, Commerce St and Regent Quay. Apart from the red light grottiness (I'm not wandering about round there at sunset taking photos!) the buildings are fascinating with enclosed courts and undercuts and little alleyways permeating the area.

A lot of the more traditional architecture in the harbour area has been razed in the name of commercial expansion, this area (containing the shore porters society building, one of the oldest registered businesses in the UK) has somehow survived but hasn't really thrived as it struggles to shed the seedy reputation. The architecture is good for modellers looking for something different from brick I reckon, and that's why I'll be using the building in the first post as the basis for a structure on my layout.

Thanks for the location. Street view is not too bad. The individual images do not align too well (see screen capture below) but it is an easy way to select a suitable subject for further study, or maybe save a return visit to show detail you may have missed first time.. Also the aerial views can be useful. There looks to be a nice little church nearby.

Best wishes,

Ray
