RMweb Gold martin_wynne Posted October 5, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 5, 2013 Is the uk.rec.models.rail newsgroup effectively dead? As far as I can see there was only one post in September. Sad to see it go, at one time there was some lively discussion and lots of modelling information on there. Over 16,000 topics -- and unlike most old web forums it is all still there and searchable: web version: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/uk.rec.models.rail Martin. RMweb Gold martin_wynne Posted October 5, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 5, 2013 If one can't reach it because it fails to load in one's browser, I'm not surprised it's over and out... ??? Just loaded ok for me in Firefox, Google Chrome, IE10, Opera, and Safari(Windows). Have you let the wet string dry out? Martin.
Grovenor
There's just a limit to the number of forums the model rail community can support and still do any modelling! Keith
jonny777
I think that if you scroll back a year or two, you will find one of the main reasons that uk.rec.models.rail died; and that was the regular spamming with threads purporting to be of a disgusting pornographic nature. (I don't really know as I did not read them, but the subject lines were bad enough). I'm afraid that there are many childish people out there in interweb-land, who associate model railway enthusiasts with personal naivety in certain sexual departments; and that seems to be enough to make them believe it would be highly amusing to post a constant stream of filth to that newsgroup. Or perhaps it's just because the Newsgroup has the word models in its title.
flubrush
Is the uk.rec.models.rail newsgroup effectively dead? As far as I can see there was only one post in September. Sad to see it go, at one time there was some lively discussion and lots of modelling information on there. Over 16,000 topics -- and unlike most old web forums it is all still there and searchable: Martin, I don't think it's dead - just very quiet. :-) When a topic is posted, it always generates responses. I suspect that a lot of the reason for the quietness these days is that the Usenet is not offered as a service by many Internet providers. I always make sure that my ISP has Usenet access and use a proper Usenet reader - Agent. I don't think uk.rec.models.rail was ever a very busy newsgroup. It was formed after interest by UK members of the very large, busy and US biased rec.models.rail but never reached the level of message traffic of the larger group. But other usenet groups are still very active - like uk.railways - with 100 - 200 messages per day. Interestingly, rec.models.rail is now extremely quiet compared with the level of traffic in its heyday. At that time it was self policed by some members to control spammers and sock puppets, but those that thought they knew better complained long and loud about activities of people like "Sheriff" John Sheridan, who then stopped doing the policing, and the group was then swamped by spam, sock puppets, etc. The genuine members left, and the group eventually died when those left got bored and moved on elsewhere. Jim.
Butler Henderson
Forums such as this have replaced it, still it had its highlights like the launch of the Dapol Pendolino which attracted a stack of complaints and a solitary message saying how brillant it was, which was easilly traced to the originator being one George Smith.
