stock_2007
I'm repainting (trying to) a Atlas RS11 into N&W blue but I'm having a problem finding the right colour by the decal sheet FLOQUIL light blue is very close, but every photo I've seen the colour seems a lot darker. I know you can never be 100% sure with a photo due to age or what the lighting was like when the photo was taken. I wondered if anyone has painted a N&W loco and what paint they used. Just one more thing the loco I'm repainting is black (ex PC) should I give it a coat of grey before the blue? As always any help is very welcome. Adrian Wintle
I don't think light blue is right. The suggestions I have seen are for a slightly darkened C&O blue (the scheme came from a proposed merger with the C&O), or Wabash blue. Possibly darkened MoPac Jenks blue would work too. Glorious NSE
I'd agree that "light blue" doesn't really describe it well! http://www.nwhs.org/archivesdb/detail.php?ID=94825
CraigZ
That blue is commonly called Pevlar Blue, named for the N&W president at the time. http://www.nwhs.org/qna/tuscan_pelvar.html has a brief discussion of the color and matching it, unfortunately using now-discontinued Floquil paints... JWB
Minor correction in the spelling: PevlEr. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herman_H._Pevler During the 1950s he was on the PRR, where he was known as "Herman the German" for what was apparently the same management style Wikipedia describes. stock_2007
I've been looking over the web trying to find dates of when N&W changed their loco liveries. The RS11 I have (Atlas) will have to be a loco their got from the NKP, The N&W's own RS11's had a stand-out cover* over the side vents on the long-hood which I'm not to sure how to model. By the dates I've found the blue livery came in around 1966 till 1970 with the livery being black before 66 and after 1970. So without dates of NKP loco repaints it could be a faded black or faded blue livery in the photos I've looked at? * The vent cover could be an extra filter I'm not sure. w124bob
I'm afraid I can't help regarding colour, but the louvered air filters should be easy to do using embossed decals from http://www.archertransfers.com/SurfaceDetailsMain.html pretty sure the 14inch louver's on simple squares and rectangles of plasticard would work quite well. Other alterations include single sand filler on top of the hood either end, small step in place of the usual sand filler lid, modify mu socket and perhaps the most difficult mod is the enlarging of the cab side windows to 3panes. Decals should be easy from here http://www.shellscale.com/ here is one to test your weathering skills just about every livery carried is showing on this loco! http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1848831 brilliant! Check out the KB&S roster as 3 of their 6 RS11's came from N&W/NKP .There are also battery box and handrail differences between phases and no dynamic brakes on NKP locos. On a side note Gaugemaster has Atlas trainman RS36 in NKP at £44.

w124bob
I knew buried somewhere among my many favourites I'd got this "how to" on N&W rs11's, pretty much gives a step by step guide with pictures including enlarging the cabside windows using the frame from a Cannon GP/SD cab kit http://www.gp30.com/models/nw375/ . He uses airfilters grills from Tiger Valley models, this guy makes(or made?) Alco and MLW white metal kits and parts for many Alco/MLW locos Website has been inactive for many years and 2010 references on Diesel Detailer forum not looking promising.
